Colloquium Series „The 1950s: Journeys into Postcolonial South Asia”

Session 1: Nehru's Voice: Resistance, Renaissance & the Rebirth of Nations in 100 Volumes

Dr. Swapna Kona Nayudu (Harvard University)

This paper is a reading of the Selected works of Jawaharlal Nehru in both series. I take up the question of what the relation is between Nehru’s politics and his historical temperament. At first glance, it may seem evident that Nehru’s political ideas were distilled in his writings and that he may have even refined them through the
speeches, letters, confessions in these volumes.
This makes the volumes an invaluable archive of political writing. I suggest a second reading of the volumes as illuminating histories of resistance, renaissance, and the rebirth of nations. Nehru’s task was to remake the world
order, and one way to do this was through his writing.
