Dienstag | 17.15 Uhr | The Coming Crisis: Antibiotic Resistance and the (Un-)Making of Efficacy: (ONLINE ONLY) Medical Anthropology Forum Purbasha Mazumdar, Department of Anthropology and Sociology, Graduate Institute, Geneva Antibiotic Resistance (ABR) has gained immense traction in contemporary global health as the next crisis-in-the-making. The fear, and the highly mediatized controversy that ensued in 2009, around a superbug—a bacteria resistant to most extant antibiotics— christened the “New Delhi” superbug ensured the scripting of India as the alleged epicentre of the unfolding ABR crisis. Given the bacteria had been isolated from a patient who had traveled for a surgical procedure to an Indian hospital has, in policy frameworks, instilled the importance of surveillance and interventions in hospitals in the fight against ABR. In this presentation, by offering insights from my ethnographic observations at an oncology hospital in Southern India, I will try to tease out the contingent dynamics of negotiating the dwindling efficacy of extant antibiotics. By following the infectious diseases team in their daily doings in the hospital, as they execute Stewardship protocols and participate in clinical encounters, the presentation intends to reveal how making decisions regarding antibiotic prescriptions in pressing clinical situations intersects with the need to cultivate a responsibility towards maintaining future antibiotic efficacies and staving off the crisis of resistance.
