The Rise of Imaging Others in Colonial Korea: The Case of Yi In-sŏng

ONLINE | The Rise of Imaging Others in Colonial Korea: The Case of Yi In-sŏng

Dr. Inhye Kang, Heidelberg University, Institute of East Asian Art History

In a painting titled "Room in Summer," created in 1934 by Yi In-sŏng, a tropical plant is seen against a middle-class domestic space of colonial Korea. The exotic leafage illustrates a fantastic scene of Southeast Asia, which became a common trope from the 1930s onwards concurrent with the Japanese Empire’s expansion in the region. The works of Yi are striking for their depiction of exotic landscapes and colorful foreign flora, reflecting the perception of the “exotic” and “tropical” as part of Korean modernity. This lecture will demonstrate the ways in which practices of representing others were transferred to colonial Korea via Japan. Works by Yi In-sŏng, one of the best-known Western style painters of the colonial period, illustrate the exoticisation of other cultures, particularly through the representations of specific plants.
