Changing Concepts of Japonisme in East Central Europe

Japonisme, if we understand it as an appreciation of Japan and its culture, or Japan’s early impact on the world, can be examined from a broader perspective. Besides being an international art trend sweeping through Europe, it can also be interpreted as a factor influencing the ethnocultural identities of East Central European peoples. Ideas about the East and the relationship with the East (“orientalism”) were not only of cultural significance to those peoples, but also played a role in shaping their collective identity in their relationship with the West. The example of the Japanese development – which itself was greatly influenced by the Western development – had a significant effect on the discourses of identity and modernity of the peoples of this region.
