Author of only two novels, Akhtaruzzaman Elias (1943-97) counts as one of the most iconic writers of 20th century Bengal. In Chilekothar Sepai (1975) and Khoabnama (1996), Elias conjures up the late 1960s and the mid-1940s in East Bengal through complex character set-ups and his very unique Bengali prose. Prof. Subhoranjan Dasgupta, an acknowledged authority on this author (he calls him "perhaps the greatest Bengali writer after Manik Bandyopadhyay"), has dedicated his book Elegy and Dream to Elias, the only English monograph on the subject. In his two lectures, he will introduce Elias's novels and guide us through his fascinating literary world.
Prof. Dr. Subhoranjan Dasgupta, born in 1949 in Kolkata, studied English Literature and History in Kolkata and worked as an editor at Deutsche Welle before he spent six years at the SAI in Heidelberg for his doctoral research on the Bengali poet Bishnu Dey from a neo-Marxist perspective. He worked as a Senior Fellow at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies and School of Women’s Studies, Jadavpur University, and retired as a Professor of Human Sciences at the Institute of Development Studies, Kolkata. His major publications include: Dialectics and Dream (1987) on the Bengali poet Bishnu Dey; The Trauma and the Triumph (2003) on the Partition in eastern India; The Tin Drummer’s Odyssey (2002) on Günter Grass etc.
