The Book in Japanese Art – Some Scenes, Some Problems

Prof. Dr. Peter Kornicki, University of Cambridge (UK) & Ishibashi Foundation Visiting Professor at Heidelberg University, Institute of East Asian Art History

In this lecture Prof. Kornicki will explore the meanings of some images of the book in the Japanese art. It will start with a photograph which was taken in 1891 and was intended for use in the souvenir albums that globetrotting tourists liked to acquire in Japan. Then it will look at some of the many images of books in the prints and paintings of Hishikawa Moronobu and Nishikawa Sukenobu. Why do books appear so often in the background of their works, even in shunga (erotic art)? And finally, what can we learn from the first reproduction of a Japanese illustrated book produced in the West, in 1855? How was that possible so early, and where was it done? Of course, none of the images shown during the lecture can be taken at face value as documentary evidence, so what value do they have for a book historian?
