Monday | 01:00 PM | The Mobility of People between Japan and China in the 21st Century Prof. Gracia Liu-Farrer, Waseda University (Japan), Sociology at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies Population movements between China and Japan resumed in the 1980s and rapidly increased in the decades thereafter. Entering the 21st Century, the trends of cross-border population movements continued despite changing economic and political contexts. Economic incentives, cultural attractions, existential concerns and lifestyle aspirations have continued to motivate people to move across the East China Sea. Moreover, an infrastructure of transnational mobility constructed by institutions, social ties, and information and communications technology exists to move people. This presentation discusses the different types of transnational Japanese and Chinese migrants and the impacts of such transnational mobilities on Japanese and Chinese societies.
