Monday | 06:15 PM | The Work of Realism in Visual Culture of 19th Century Japan Dr. Maki Fukuoka, University of Leeds / Ishibashi Foundation Visiting Professor My lecture will probe into the question of transnational realism. My initial interest in histories of photography began with a question of realism. In many ways, the question continues to lead me to aspects of its history, such as the concepts of mimesis, text-image relations, and intellectual history. On one hand, the medium has been broadly accepted as a pictorial refi nement of a European realist tradition, while this assertion has been challenged in theoretical and historical analysis. On the other hand, there appears to be a particular transnational realism that emerged in the context of the pursuit of knowledge in 19th century Japan. Using the examples from texts and images from medical and herbal studies in 19th century Owari and its relationship to Chinese and Western medicine, as well as early photographic attempts, I want to consider the notion of accuracy as a key constituent of East Asian realism on epistemic and ontological levels.
