Khamosh Pani (2003)

Khamosh Pani or Silent Waters is an Indo-Pakistani Punjabi-language film directed by Sahiba Sumar and written by Paromita Vohra. Starring Kirron Kher, Shilpa Shukla, Aamir Ali Malik, Raghubir Yadav, and others, and winning many national and international awards, the film revolves around the life of a widowed woman and her son in a village in Pakistan. Khamosh Pani is located in the period under the prime ministership of General Zia-ul-Haq in Pakistan in the 1970s which witnessed the radicalization of society triggered by the American response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. This radicalization Khamosh Pani argues, obliterated the values and memories of a mixed Hindu and Sikh-Muslim culture of a life lived together in the region by renewing the painful memories of Hindu and Sikh-Muslim violence from the time of the Partition. The pain of these renewed memories of violence becomes almost impossible to bear.
