1947: Earth (1999)

1947: Earth is an Indo-Canadian Hindi-language drama directed and written by Deepa Mehta. Based on Bapsi Sidhwa’s novel Ice Candy Man originally published in 1988 in English, the film tells the story of Partition violence in Lahore that unfolds between friends. Recounted from the perspective of a young Parsi girl, the film shows how her family escaped violence due to the Parsis remaining neutral to the rising tensions between Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims in 1947. Starring Aamir Khan, Rahul Khanna, Nandita Das, Kitu Gidwani, and Arif Zakaria among others, 1947: Earth is a poignant story that depicts how personal tragedy and biography become interwoven within larger battles, with personal stories having a strong role to play in influencing the Partition riots.
