Ecological Anxiety and Grief Across Generations in Britain

Dr. Bridget Bradley, University of St Andrews (UK), Department of Social Anthropology

In this lecture, Dr Bridget Bradley shares early ideas from her ongoing project ‘Eco Worrier, Eco Warrior’ which is funded by the Scottish Funding Council, and supported by her research team (Dr Rika Hirose, Hannah Fitchett and Eleonora Ranuzzi).
This paper presents recent findings from virtual interviews and focus groups among climate activists between the ages of 17 and 80, describing the psychological and social effects of their engagement in climate-related issues. We critically analyse the labelling of the term ‘eco-anxiety’, demonstrating different perspectives on the medicalization of this lived experience. Further, we examine the role of care, demonstrating the challenges faced by parents who attempt to raise climate-conscious while also trying to avoid conversations that might induce fear or anxiety. In terms of care, we also discuss the pressures on climate activists to maintain self-care practices and avoid burnout through building psychological resilience strategies. Finally, this work reveals the importance of paying attention to the social and emotional responses to catastrophe more broadly and demonstrates the significant effects on people who live with the realities of a future at risk from the climate crisis.
