Cryospheric Hazard in the Nanda Devi Region, Uttarakhand

Dr. Rakesh Bhambri, Heidelberg University, South Asia Institute, Department of Geography

Content: In the morning (~10.30 AM) of 7 February 2021, a major rock-ice avalanche detached (~5,600 m a.s.l.) near the Trisul Peak in the Nanda Devi massif. After this avalanche, a massive debris-flow-type flood occurred in the Rishi Ganga / Dhauliganga river, that caused the loss of life and destroyed infrastructure in the downstream areas including two hydropower plants, bridges and roads. We present an overview of this disaster based on available remote sensing images and ground observations collected by local reports.
