Donnerstag | 16.15 Uhr | The Reunification of Hindusthan?: V.D. Savarkar on Hindu Pasts and Hindutva Futures Hybrid event Prof. Dr. Vinayak Chaturvedi, University of California Irvine (USA) On July 1, 1947, V.D. Savarkar delivered a speech entitled ‘Protest Against the Vivisection of Hindusthan’ in which he argued that the forthcoming ‘Partition’ was only going to be a temporary phenomenon. He reminded his audience that Hindu history was full of examples in which Hindus had faced many emergencies in the past—dating back to antiquity—but they had historically persevered to overcome all national crises. He argued that the ‘Partition’ would one day be remembered as an aberration of modern history following the resurrection of a new Hindu Empire. This paper explains that Savarkar’s interpretation that ‘Hindutva is a history’ provides an important insight about the need for Hindus to understand their history in order to imagine a Hindutva future that would reunite all Hindus within the same nation, territory, and map. Savarkar argued that the task of this reunification would require a state of perpetual war between Hindus and Muslims. Through an examination of Savarkar’s key writings on history, historiography, and historical methodology, this paper traces Savarkar’s ideas about Hindutva, violence, and the politics of history.
