Abstract:
In this talk concluding the lecture series, I would like to invite you to ponder on the general history of reading practices in China since 1978 by asking why China’s bitter youths, among China’s Generation Z, are embracing Mao when they are frustrated with long working hours and dwindling opportunities. What’s the reality of turning back to Mao as many Chinese young people turn to “Selected Works of Mao Zedong” to find answers? Why have those discussion group sreading “Selected Works of Mao Zedong” formed on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo? What do Mao’s mistakes and the brutal history of class struggle in the Mao Era (1949-1976) mean to these young Mao fans? Professor SUN is the Michael J. Zak associate professor of history for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Cornell University. After being an associate professor of history at Fudan University (Shanghai), she was a visiting professor at Sciences Po and European Institutes for Chinese studies in Paris from Feb.2020 to June 2021. She is a social and cultural historian of the post-1949 period. Her research has centred on the history and contemporary implications of Chinese everyday life and politics. She has published on topics such as global reading practices, the politics of fashion, and mate choices in China. Peidong is currently working on a book tentatively entitled "Underground Epistemologies: How the Cultural Revolution Shaped the Xi Jinping Generation.”
