The Chinese White Dolphin has a special place in Hong Kong as it was made the handover mascot of Hong Kong, when Britain returned the region to China in 1997. It is also nicknamed the ‘giant panda in the sea’ due to its rareness, adorable appearance and friendliness. Today, they are facing the greatest challenge. Their numbers have plunged nearly 75%, from 188 in 2003 to 47 in 2017. Since these dolphins live close to shore, they are hugely susceptible to adverse effects of human activities. Loss and degradation of habitat over the years is pushing the species towards extinction. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Daphne Wong is a wildlife photographer and filmmaker with a passion for everything about nature, especially the small and underappreciated species. Working in both photography and video, she is deeply committed to telling stories surrounding nature and its conservation. She aspires to becoming a wildlife camera operator, hoping to inspire people to respect and conserve the natural world.

Chris Michael Owen, Wild about Hong Kong (YouTube Channel), since 2017.
Born in Africa and raised in Hong Kong, Chris Michael Owen is a first-class graduate from International Academy of Film and Television (IAFT) Hong Kong and a Hong Kong-based young filmmaker. Since 2014, he has served as both a cinematographer and a studio manager at Video Cha Cha. In 2017, he set up a YouTube channel named “WILD about HK” and began to shoot a documentary about Hong Kong’s wildlife, introducing Hong Kong’s unique natural habitat as well as the challenges of urban development and pollution problems faced by Hong Kong. The cameraperson is persistent and passionate in producing high-quality images in live scenarios, capturing Hong Kong’s wildlife in their natural habitats.

Alle Termine der Veranstaltung 'Sinophone Filmmaking: Identity and Environment - A Lecture Series with Winnie L. M. YEE (University of Hong Kong)':

This year’s Taiwan Lecture series will engage Professor Winnie Yee from the University of Hong Kong in a discussion on Sinophone Filmmaking. In the course, we will focus on how documentary films popularize the concept of the Anthropocene and its emphasis on the planetary conditions circumscribing human societies and systems in Taiwan in the contemporary era. The course will examine the intersections between films and ecology and will apply tools of ecocritical media studies to investigate representations of the relationships between humans and the natural world. We will cover mainly documentaries in this course and contextualize the topics within the evolving history of environmental and sociopolitical movements in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Students can expect to gain a broader understanding of and appreciation for the cinematic depictions of nature and non-human worlds in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Students will also be familiarized with how moving images mediate our relationship to environment in rhetorical, aesthetical and perceptual ways.

Winnie L. M. Yee is a Senior Lecturer of Comparative Literature and program coordinator of the MA Program in Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Hong Kong. Her research interests are ecocriticism, contemporary Chinese literature and film, Hong Kong culture, and independent cinema. She has been a fellow at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich and the Worldmaking Center—A Dialogue with China.

Films will be introduced briefly and screenings will be followed by a public discussion.
