Montag | 13.00 Uhr | Labour Migration under Recession: A Comparative Study of Younger and Older Japanese Skilled Workers in China Dr. Kumiko Kawashima, Rikkyo University (Japan), Department of Culture and Tourism Studies This lecture presents the contrasting experiences of younger and older Japanese skilled migrants in northeastern China to consider the generational impact of an economic downturn. Findings from in-depth interviews show that while poorer working conditions under a recession motivated both groups to migrate, the timing of the recession had a significant influence on each cohort’s social and geographical mobility patterns. A generational perspective is fruitful as it demonstrates that life course patterns are shaped historically and institutionally.
