The Rosetsu Show at Museum Rietberg, Zurich

Prof. Dr. Matthew McKelway, Columbia University, Kunstgeschichte

Matthew McKelway specializes in the history of Japanese painting. He earned his doctorate at Columbia University and conducted his doctoral research at Gakushūin University, where he has spent three additional years as a visiting scholar. His research has focused on urban representation in rakuchū rakugai zu (screen paintings of Kyoto), the development of genre painting in early modern Japan, Kano school painting, and individualist painters in 18th century Kyoto. Interests in the materiality and techniques of Japanese painting and the early Kano workshop have led to recent articles.
His study of the painter Nagasawa Rosetsu will culminate in a major exhibition of his work, “Rosetsu—Fantastische Bilderwelten aus Japan”, curated by him and Dr. Khanh Trinh at the Museum Rietberg in the Fall of 2018.

In two talks Professor McKelway, who has been the Ishibashi Foundation Visiting Professor of Japanese Art History at Heidelberg University in 2012, sheds light on his curatorial work for the exhibition and the paintings of Rosetsu.

18:30 "Making an Exhibition: Nagasawa Rosetsu and Cultural Heritage in Late-Heisei Japan"
