A theistic analysis of Vedic rituals by Vallabhacarya (1479-1531 CE)

A theistic analysis of Vedic rituals by Vallabhācārya (1479-1531 CE)

Anand Mishra, Universität Heidelberg, Südasien-Institut

My talk will focus on one specific aspect of a broader research project I am pursuing on the dynamics of early scholasticism primarily based on the writings of Vallabhācārya (1479-1531 CE), who posited the philosophy of Sākāra-Brahmavāda or more famously Śuddhādvaita and founded an influential Vaiṣṇava sect, Puṣṭi-mārga or ‚the path of grace‘.

The writings of Vallabhācārya present an important example of how diverging philosophical, cultural and social positions are negotiated and relocated within the conceptual framework of a new school of thought. Based on the second part— Sarvanirṇaya-prakaraṇa —of a larger work Tattvārthadīpanibandha in Sanskrit by Vallabhācārya, I will outline the detailed and extensive attempts to realign the hallmark of Vedic tradition, namely the Śrauta-rituals within the theistic parameters. Since the main contestants here are the ritualists and the Mīmāṃsakas, the argumentational techniques followed are also from these traditions. An important line of argument, for example, is based on the structural correspondence between the body of the rituals and the body of god.
