The music of China is characterized by the recurring importance of influxes from outside, and the question of how these “Barbarian Pipes and Strings” (or, in Confucian terms, the “musics from Zheng and Wei”) become part of Chinese music making. The question of what is “authentic” in Chinese music, therefore, has imposed itself from very early on. Looking back on several millenia of musical exchanges, this lecture series (and the seminar going along with it), supported by the Fachschaft Sinologie, will question whether and how it is actually interesting or pertinent to pose this question.
The seminar and the lecture series will unpack contemporary musical practices in China by providing an overview of Chinese musical cultures from the beginnings to the present day, discussing archeological finds and philosophical ideas about music in China, deliberating what they can tell us about musical politics and “music wars” in days long past, as well as in the present. We will be scrutinizing China’s ancient fascinations with music cosmology and its repercussions in the building and tuning of instruments; we will study the greater importance of silence over sound in China’s musical philosophy and its continuous effects in music-making all the way to the present; we will investigate religious, stately and theatrical traditions and their gendered musical cultures; while highlighting cosmopolitan musical encounters from the ancient days to the present—encountering the Chinese Beethoven through the writings of Romain Rolland, the Chinese piano in the hands of Zhu Xiaomei and Yuja Wang, and singing traditions from Xian Xinghai to Cui Jian and beyond.
The lecture series will take place on Wednesdays at 6pm, most often in the Auditorium (please consult moodle for details).
