Alle Termine der Veranstaltung 'The Ideology of the Total State: The Book of Lord Shang (Shangjunshu 商君書) and its intellectual context':

The Book of Lord Shang (Shangjunshu 商君書) is a fascinating and hugely controversial text, which, for a variety of reasons had been all but neglected in Sinological research until very recently. Our meeting will focus on reading and discussing selected chapters of this text and placing its ideas in the broad context of intellectual developments of the Warring States period. In particular, I propose to explore the book’s evolutionary view of history, its concept of human nature, its economic and military thought, particularly the idea of a “total war,” and its peculiar view of meritocracy. Parallels and differences with such texts as Mozi, Sunzi, Xunzi, Han Feizi, and the like will be highlighted throughout.
