Indigenous Cultural Identities and Practices in Higher Education

Tien-tai Wu, Dong Hwa University Taiwan, Ethnic Relations and Cultures

Indigenous Studies within the Academy started from encouraging indigenous students to study themselves by the academic trainings in the College of Indigenous Studies (CIS) in 2001. In order to get the balance between indigenous and multicultural education, both indigenous and non-indigenous graduate students have conducted their thesis about indigenous affairs. There are three core elements about indigenous studies which are culture, language and development. We emphasize the importance of cultural preserving and longevity.

After 18 years, we bring not only more indigenous peoples but also excellent indigenous studies into the higher education. Indigenous curriculum such as Indigenous Cultures in Taiwan, World Indigenous Cultures, Ethnic Languages are all required courses in CIS. Many indigenous courses such as indigenous history, Indigenous Social Development, Indigenous Education are all available for the college students. We also offer some courses such as Indigenous cultures, inter-cultural communication, Eastern Taiwan History for the General Education in the university. It is important to create a multicultural learning environment for both indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in higher education.

Faculty members go through the integrated research projects and are forming the feelings of in the same boat in campus. We learn from each other including the colleagues from different disciplines, tribal elders and students. Beyond cultural responsive teaching, indigenous cultures are represented and recreated by “enhancing education relevancy, family and community involvement and cultural identity (McCarty 2012)” in the CIS. We connect each other and promote a new model for indigenous higher education in Taiwan.
