Mittwoch | 17.00 Uhr | Socioecological Assemblages in the Himalaya: Contested Hydel Projects and Green Courts in India Dr. Sudha Vasan, University of Delhi, Department of Sociology Large hydel power projects are expanding significantly in last two decades across the Himalayan region, seen by the state as green development, and often by local people as dispossession and displacement. This paper ethnographically examines elements of this case, the socio-ecological assemblages that formed around the case, and their afterlives. Intersections and tensions between cultural and ecological imaginations invoked by diverse elements of this assemblage are deconstructed to examine the construction of expertise, the invocation of ethics, and the understanding of nature/culture. The deserving poor, timeless culture and fragile environment emerge as elements of a master environmental narrative, and the paper shows the significance of legal institutions in co-producing new socio-ecological assemblages.
