Who are you? Questions from one’s other self, the Doppelgänger:

Prof. Tomoko Kuwabara, Kyoto University, Graduate School of Education (Chair of Clinical Psychology)

What is the self? Although the answer seems to be evident, we don’t exactly know when giving it a second thought. One phenomenon that rises from the destruction of this certainty is the Doppelgänger. Doppelgänger is a phenomenon whereby the self looks at itself from the “outside”. On the one hand, it is as a symptom for grave mental disorders like schizophrenia. On the other, healthy people in state of exhaustion also experience it. Last but no least we meet this “self” daily when looking into the mirror.

If this “other self” is the “real self”, who am I then? How can the “self”, which is moved by this question, find the “real” self?

Together with the audience, this lecture aims to answer the question of what the “self” is.

This lecture is part of the “Nichi-Doku Joint Lecture” (Japanese-German Joint Lecture) is organized in close cooperation between the Kyoto University European Center in Heidelberg and the Heidelberg University Office in Kyoto — the liaison offices of both universities in Japan and Germany. It aims at promoting and strengthening research exchange between Heidelberg University and Kyoto University.
