Monday | 05:00 PM | A Turning Point in Modern Chinese Art: Westward Migration of Artists during the Second Sino-Japanese War Prof. Dr. Zhihong Zhao, Sichuan University, College of Art At the beginning of the 20th century, Chinese art experienced dramatic transformations, resulted by its entanglement with global modernity. In this process of transformation, due to the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the centre of Chinese culture and art moved to the western region. A "Westward Migration" movement, therefore, was launched among the artists. This movement not only challenged the existing landscape of Chinese art, but also expanded the vision of Chinese artists, which stimulated changes in their works. It deeply influenced the aesthetic attitude and artistic style of many contemporary artists. This lecture examines the impact of the "Westward Migration" movement on the overall structure of Chinese art, and explores the its significance by repositioning it into a larger cultural and historical context.
