Conflicting Messages?:

Two Christian Puranas from Early-Modern Goa

Prof. Dr. Alexander Henn, Arizona State University (USA), School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies

In the early seventeenth century, Jesuit missionaries produced and published two remarkable translations of Christian content in Indian language in Goa. Both texts reveal astonishing expertise not only of the local languages Konkani and Marathi, but also of the current culture of Bhakti devotion on the Western coast of India and became popular as Christian Puranas. Intriguingly, though, the texts seem to dramatically differ with regard to their respective “religious attitude” vis-a-vis the Indian tradition they borrow as media and template for the production of the Christian literature. Looking closely at these texts, the question occurs: what did translation mean in the early modern encounter of Christian and Bhakti traditions in Western India?
