Design and the Social in Modern Japan

Dr. Sarah Teasley, Royal College of Art, London

For the past decade, social design has increasingly gained attention within communities of designers, policymakers, educators and local community organisers alike. The practice, which attempts to leverage ‘designerly ways of working’ to democratize decision-making, improve social wellbeing and make public service delivery more effective, has been explored and often embraced within Japan as within Europe. It also represents a shift within design practice from design of tangible consumer products to an environmental, social approach concerned with design as ethical practice and intangible system. From a historical perspective however social design can also be interpreted as a further manifestation of modern design’s preoccupation with expertise, audiences and the greater good. Beginning with social design, this lecture turns a critical eye towards the relationship of society and design, as configured within design practice and theory, in modern Japan from the Meiji period to the present day.
