The Polyfunctionality of Script on Medieval Badges:

Prof. Dr. Ann Marie Rasmussen, University of Waterloo (Kanada), Germanic and Slavic Studies

Some 20,000 medieval, pewter badges have been found in England, the Low Countries, northern France, and in northern and central Germanspeaking lands. While the majority of badges display only a familiar image, many include script in some form. This talk explores five distinct ways that image and script interact on these badges and concludes by considering how this knowledge might contribute to our understanding of badges as signs and thus to the semiotics of communication in the Middle Ages.
