Popo FAN 范坡坡 (b. 1985, he/him) is a queer filmmaker, writer, and activist from China. Under the precarious conditions of cultural production in the People's Republic due to state censorship, he has already produced several independent short films and documentaries that have been screened at national film festivals such as the Beijing Queer Film Festival and the Beijing Independent Film Festival, as well as at international film festivals. His films cover topics such as same-sex marriage (New Beijing, New Marriage), transgender (Be A Woman), and feminism (The VaChina Monologues). Fan's trilogy Chinese Closet, Mama Rainbow, Papa Rainbow focus on Chinese LGBTIQ+ families. In 2011, Fan received the Prism Award from the Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Fan has been living in Berlin since 2017. His work has been funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung's Grenzgänger program, among others. In 2017, he participated in the young talent program Berlinale Talents and was a jury member for the queer film award Teddy Award at the Berlinale 2019.

Thùy Trang Nguyễn (b. 1993, they/them) was born in Berlin and attended Freie Universität Berlin and ifs köln, receiving their B.A. in film theory and directing in 2021. Their short films were shown at national and international festivals, including Filmfestival Max Ophüls Preis 2021 and Iris Prize LGBT+ Film Festival 2021. As a filmmaker Nguyễn worked in several other positions – assistant director, editor, sound engineer, caster and consultant. In 2012, they were a co-founding member of Berlin Asian Film Network, a non-profit organization for Asian-German artists. Their occupation spans co-writing for TV shows, lecturing, facilitating multimedia art projects and creating a map for Asian-diasporic spaces in Berlin.

Alle Termine der Veranstaltung 'Wegen Hegel 1.0 – Filmisches Wirken zum Abbau toxischer Stereotype – Workshops und Filmscreenings':

Inspired by real events and personal experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, Popo FAN’s 范坡坡 (b. 1985) short film Wegen Hegel (2022) deals with the issue of discrimination in Germany. The story is set against the backdrop of the worldwide increase of verbal and physical attacks against Asians or people who are perceived as Asians since the beginning of the pandemic. At the same time, it highlights the discrimination of queer people of Asian descent based on prevailing toxic stereotypes. Acknowledging the transformative impact of cinematic works, the workshop will stimulate a conversation about the pressing questions in the construction of cultural, sexual, and gender identities that takes transcultural dynamics into account.

In the workshop we will invite external speakers such as Berlin-based queer filmmakers Popo FAN and Thùy Trang Nguyễn. Participants will explore the impacts of cinematic representations taking Wegen Hegel as an entry point and juxtaposing it with Thùy Trang Nguyễn’s perspectives. The visibility of queer Asians in German society and their representation in German film will also be discussed. Participants are welcome to only join parts of the program.
