Modules in the Arts from the Northern Silk Road

Museum Planning and New Research in the Humboldt Forum

Dr. Lilla Russell-Smith, Kuratorin für Zentralasiatische Kunst, Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

The "Modules" in the title has two meanings: it refers to the modules being planned for the Humboldt Forum in the centre of Berlin, where the Museum für Asiatische Kunst is moving together with other institutions. The first part of the lecture will briefly introduce this work, with the focus on the world-famous "Turfan Collection" comprised of art and artefacts from Xinjiang sites. In the Humboldt Forum much more will be shown than it had been possible in Dahlem and the lecture will also demonstrate how we are developing a more dynamic exhibition concept, where new research results can also be shown.

The title also refers to the book title by Professor Lothar Ledderose: Ten Thousand Things: Module and Mass Production in Chinese Art, which remains an inspiration. Ongoing research will be presented comparing Uygur period art (10th-11th centuries) in the Turfan area and from Dunhuang, especially considering the importance of magic and performance, building on the evidence presented by Professor Sarah E. Fraser's in her ground-breaking study, Performing the Visual, The Practice of Buddhist Wall Painting in China and Central Asia.
